During the balmy summer days New York‘s Mid-Manhattan Library is packed with people making the most of the warm weather. People will mill around on the grass eating ice creams or sit on the stairs reading books; Tourists will swarm to take photos sitting on top of the two lions – ‘Patience’ and ‘Fortitude’ – guarding the entrance, and along the balcony old men will sit and read the paper, talk about the latest news, smoke, or play chess.
But as the seasons change so do the people enjoying the steps and balcony of the Mid-Manhattan Library. The negative degree temperatures send people indoors where the heaters are, and the tourists stop to take a quick snap of the lions before dashing into the nearest Starbucks to warm up.
Despite the cold though the area is always a beautiful sight -manicured gardens, giggles as Dads help their children climb onto the lions backs, and always the warm inviting library doors welcoming anyone who cares to come in side. And if you’d rather stay outside in the cold there’s always one crazy man braving the cold to talk about the latest news with.
