On the corner of Chapel Street and Toorak Road in stylish South Yarra, The Como Melbourne mixes Australian charm with modern conveniences and a dash of celebrity style. In the 90’s, The Como was the place to stay – the pinnacle of style in Australia – and it remains a loyal favourite mixing contemporary style and old world glamour.
Even now, the celebrities autographs that adorn the foyers lobby can attest to having a great rest at The Como but there is one celebrity who has not yet checked out, and you’ll find him waiting to greet you in every room.
The Como Duck has taken up residence at the hotel almost since the hotel opened some 25 years ago. The story goes that the General Manager at the time received a guest letter stating how much he loved the hotel and it was his home away from home, but “the only thing missing is my rubber duck.” So, the General Manager decided to create one.
Today, you’ll find The Como duck in every bathroom at the hotel and is a gift you can take home to remember your stay.
Since we’re already talking about bathtime, let’s discuss the bathrooms of the Open Plan Suites. The spacious granite bathrooms give you a glimpse of the 90’s charm – can we say that about the nineties? – and the black stone will wow you at first glance. Separate baths and showers, cosy robes and that signature blue duck are sure to put a smile on everyone’s face. They have a very stylish acrylic bathtub. The toiletries are by luxury Australian brand APPELLES who combine essential oils and natural ingredients to make some of my favourite skincare products. (Be sure to try the moisturising Willow Bark Hand & Body Wash!)
With 107 guest rooms, the onus is on attention to detail and unparalleled customer service. With the exception of a long wait to check-in due to an event taking place at the hotel, the staff were exemplary, even when I spent a good half an hour one night talking to them about the property and their favourite things to do in South Yarra and Melbourne.
Forget cookie cutter rooms which leave you feeling boxed in; the first thing you will notice when you walk into your an Open Plan Suite is the space. The rooms come well-appointed with king size bed, full lounge room and kitchenette with basic amenities. There’s also a study nook off the main living area. The study nook off the entry hall (I did manage to capture a photo of the chair in the study (
The study nook off the entry hall (I did manage to capture a photo of the chair in the study (far below) but not a good image of the desk!) is perfect for when travelling with a partner or you need to work undisturbed. Being tucked away from the ‘bedroom’ ensures you won’t be disturbing your partners slumber as there’s no division between the lounge and the bedroom in the Open Plan Suites.
One little extra I loved was the inclusion of T2 teas and locally pressed, cold drink coffee in the mini bars. The perfect drink to enjoy with the delicious welcome platter and catching up on work.
Being situated in such a busy location, I was a bit worried that there would be more noise – especially with trams and trains close by – but rooms were quiet and peaceful. The view from my balcony was of Chapel Street but I’ve been told some rooms offer a lovely view of the Japanese gardens.
Even with being located near some of Melbourne’s best restaurants and cafes, the property attends to all your needs. Be sure to dress up and enjoy drinks at the stylish SOBAR before heading out for a night on the town. The Brasserie – open for breakfast, lunch and dinner – offers a sophisticated menu which is sure to please no matter what your appetite calls for.
Make sure you have some time to relax poolside. The perfect spot to relax year around, I found the indoor pool deck peaceful and enjoyed swimming one morning undisturbed. There’s also a small but well-equipped gym next door to the pool.
If you really want to splurge, book the Gold Suite, a split-room penthouse that hosts a baby grand piano, wet bar, private terrace and the biggest in-bathroom bathtub I’ve seen. It’s where the in-conversation with Offspring co-creator and author Debra Oswald was hosted and I was in awe all night (and was tempted to lock the door and enjoy a bubble bath!)
The Como is part of Accor’s MGallery Collection. Each MGallery hotel around the world offers a ‘Memorable Moment’ which is unique to that property.
Being at the intersection of fashion and style, it’s only fitting that The Como’s memorable moment is fashion forward. Be coached by the Channel 10 stylist to the stars – the networks studios are located right next door! – with a three-hour personal shopping experience along the Chapel Street Precinct before being treated to champagne and a relaxing night at the property. Sign me up!
