Important information about choosing a Kuala Lumpur Airport hotel:
Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is a large hub airport with two distinct terminals: KLIA and klia2.
KLIA is the original terminal – often referred to as KLIA Main or Main Terminal – designated for International and Domestic departures with full-service carriers such as Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Cathay Pacific, and Garuda Indonesia.
Most of the international flights departing and arriving at KLIA will be found at Satellite Terminal A, a short terminal-to-terminal aerotrain ride from KLIA’s main terminal.
klia2 – also known as Terminal 2 – is the low-cost carrier (LCC) terminal. It is AirAsia’s hub but also welcomes airlines such as Scoot, Jetstar Asia, Cebu Pacific, Malindo Air, and Nok Air.
While both terminals are part of the same airport, and the KLIA Expres is very easy to move between them, it’s important to consider allowing extra travel time required to reach the terminal building where your flight is departing, if you will need to take a taxi from your off-site accommodation, and how much luggage you will have with you. Knowing all of this will help you have a stress-free layover in Kuala Lumpur.
Why stay at an airport hotel in Kuala Lumpur
It’s a one hour drive minimum to the airport from Kuala Lumpur, accommodation near the airport is perfect for those who want to see Kuala Lumpur but might have an early flight or want to miss the heavy traffic known to plague the cities roads.
For those who have a long transit, missed a flight or had a flight cancelled, it’s worth considering a Kuala Lumpur Airport transit hotel to rest and unwind during your journey before taking on the next leg. It’s amazing how much better you will feel after a nap and a shower!
How to get between KLIA and klia2
KLIA and klia2 are set up as two distinct terminals at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. It takes approximately 3-10 minutes to travel between the two terminals, depending on how you choose to travel.
- KLIA Ekspres – the fastest options between KLIA and klia2 is the Express Rail Link (ERL) train – better known as KLIA Transit or KLIA Ekspres. The train runs every 15 minutes during peak hours or 20 during off-peak.
- KLIA Ekspres costs RM2.00 (AU$0.70/US$0.50) for adults and RM1.00 (child) one-way. You will need to clear customs and immigration to take advantage of the train.
- Free Shuttle Bus – exclusively for passengers with inter-connecting flights can take the free shuttle bus running between KLIA and klia2 24/7. The bus runs every 10 minutes and can be booked in advance online at the Terminal Transfer Counters.
- You can find the bus at Door 4, Level 1 in KLIA. At klia2, the waiting area is located at Bay A10, Level 1, Transportation Hub, [email protected] mall.

Napzone KLIA by Sovotel
Long-haul flights got you feeling cramped but want to save as much money on a KL Airport transit hotel? Napzone KLIA may fit the brief.
Napzone offers minimalist accommodation for a minimum of four-hour stays for transit passengers. What that means is that they offer a short-stay capsule hotel-style facility. Pods are segregated by gender, although couples can often be accommodated in pods near each other.
Each of the large air-conditioned pods comes complete with fresh linens, a complimentary bottle of water, privacy curtains, powerpoint, and a hook for any bags or jackets you want to bring into the pod with you.
Guests also have access to a personal storage locker for the duration of their stay. Complimentary WiFi is available throughout the hotel.
One downside is that there are no shower facilities inside Napzone KLIA.
If you are a light sleeper, I would recommend bringing earplugs and an eye mask, but I found the pods to be quiet except when the morning rush begins.
If you finish your nap but still have some time, relax in the lounge room in one of the many massage chairs with a free coffee or tea. Bliss!
Napzone KLIA sure beats sleeping on the floor of the airport!
Location: NapZone is in the Satellite Terminal, mezzanine floor (I think the nearest gates are C11-17) Do not go through immigration!

There are several styles of room available at The YouniQ Hotel suiting those on a budget (dormitory-style capsule hotels separated by sex), those who want privacy without spending too much (standard double rooms or super deluxe rooms, the latter with city views), or rooms for those who need something a little bigger (triples come with a double bed + one single bed; family rooms come with a double bed and a bunk bed).
