Kuala Lumpur is a great play to have a layover when flying long-haul to Asia or beyond, and if you need to stay than Hotel Sama-Sama is the perfect place to stay.
With Kuala Lumpur’s city centre an hour away by car or train from the airport, staying near Kuala Lumpur International Airport is the best option for early morning flights, transit passengers seeking a kip between flights (including day stays), or those that don’t want to commute and risk being stuck in traffic transiting between the city centre and airport.
I’ve stayed at Hotel Sama-Sama three-times now; the first when I missed a connecting flight and latter two during overnight layovers in Kuala Lumpur. My experience has been the same on every trip: five-star service without the price tag!
Welcome to Hotel Sama-Sama Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA)
Located just steps away from Kuala Lumpur’s International Airport (KLIA) on the landside and connected by an undercover walkway with a few small shops along it, Hotel Sama-Sama is KLIAs award-winning luxury airport hotel.
While it’s best suited for those flying from KLIA, if you are flying a low-cost airline from KLIA2 (the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal), there’s a bus that will connect you quickly from the hotel to terminal for MYR$2.50.
After being collected by the complimentary orange buggy on Level 2 (look for the intercom on the far wall after you come down the escalators if one isn’t waiting), we zoomed down the corridor connecting the airport to the hotel. The journey, a little over two minutes long, ended with the porters taking my bags to my room while I checked in.
Walking in you will forget you are at Kuala Lumpur’s airport hotel. Entering the impressive atrium where check-in is located, you’ll spot palm trees and orchids running the length of the lobby, and twinkling lights mimicking stars in the ceiling high above. There’s a cafe to one side and a bar a little further on. The glittering, gold elevators waiting to whisk you away to your room for a much-needed rest.
Check-in was speedy, starting with the presentation of a cool juice and scented towel; a ritual customary in many Malaysian properties.
Those in Premier rooms have the ability to have a late check-out of 3 pm, subject to availability. Those in Deluxe Rooms will have a 12noon checkout but if you have an evening flight be sure to ask for a late check-out as I’ve found they will try to accommodate you.
The Rooms at Hotel Sama-Sama Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA)
On this particular stay, I chose to stay in one of their Deluxe Rooms. This is, in my opinion, the best value for money for a short-layer; particularly if you can get one with a view of the runway.
The spacious Deluxe Rooms feature warm rich colours and Malay influences. Equipped with a king bed and crisp white sheets with orange textiles, a large dark wood writing desk, and a daybed where I like to sprawl out to watch departing and arrival of airplanes. There’s also a 32″ TV with a mix of local and cable channels – come to me StarWorld!
A minibar is offered with complimentary water (replenished daily), as well as a Coffee Bean & Team Leaf coffee machine.
One of the best
gimmicks aspects of the room is that all the lights and blinds can be operated by an iPad conveniently located by your bed. From this, you can control the temperature of the room and many other tasks, including accessing the Internet.
The free WiFi was quick and reliable and, most importantly, it was easy to connect to.
The Bathrooms are large and spacious with ample room for two people to use. Fluffy towels, robes, and slippers are supplied. The standard range of toiletries are provided (soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and moisturiser).
I’ve found that most of the rooms come with a large stand-in shower, but there are rooms with baths! Be sure to ring and request for one, or ask upon check-in.
The Premier Lounge at Hotel Sama-Sama Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA)
If you choose to stay in a Premier room or Suite, you’ll have access to the Premier Lounge.
It was a pretty standard hotel lounge but still comfortable, with plenty of modern fittings. The lounge offers a buffet breakfast every day, and snacks & drinks available throughout the day. There’s also a complimentary happy hour if you fancy a drink each evening.
What else is at Hotel Sama-Sama Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA)?
There are four restaurants and cafes on site, alongside room-service and Lounge access to those staying in the Premier floor of the hotel. The restaurants and room service serve a mix of both local Malaysian, Asian, and Western food. Personally, I recommend the — from the room service menu. Serviced alongside a sweet Teh Tarik and a jug of ice water!
Onsite you’ll also find a 24-hour gym that includes a jacuzzi, steam room, tennis court, and sauna. There’s also an outdoor swimming pool and spa.
Just outside the hotel is a few small shops selling souvenirs and one offering beauty services.

How to get to Hotel Sama-Sama: The hotel is located adjacent to Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1.
Head by elevator or escalator to Level 2. From here, you can catch the Hotel Sama-Sama buggy (if it’s not there, use the Hotel Sama-Sama intercom on the far wall, to call for it to come to collect you) or follow the corridor; the walk takes around 7 minutes to get to the hotel.
Can I get to KLIA2 from Hotel Sama-Sama? Yes. There is a complimentary shuttle service from Hotel Sama-Sama to klia2 return four-times a day. Currently, they are as follows –
Departing the hotel: 5 AM, 6 AM, 7 AM, 12 NOON
Departing klia2: 8 AM, 10 AM, 7 PM, 9 PM
Is this a transit hotel? This review is about the airport hotel, situated before international customs on the landside. More recently, they have opened the Sama-Sama Express KLIA transit hotel and the Sama-Sama Express klia2 which are on the airside of their respective terminals and perfect for those who don’t want – or can’t – leave the terminal.
