When walking down Bourke Street, Melbourne’s shopping strip, it’s hard to miss the Myer Christmas window display. Each year visitors and locals head to the city to visit what has become a Christmas tradition. A queue of people will be snapping photos or gazing into the windows at the moving display and a soundtrack of Christmas music will be playing for all to hear. Best of all it’s free!
2011’s theme is ‘Santa Claus is coming to town’ and each of the windows tells the story – from making the presents, to flying in his sleigh with reindeer, and finally delivering them – but my favourite window of the present Christmas tree and the children of the world in national dress holding hands and ‘dancing’ beneath.
If you want to visit Myer Melbourne’s Christmas display I recommend that you visit during the day before 5pm as Bourke Street will fill up with students and professionals trying to get home as well as locals visiting the display. If you visit outside of these times you may find that there is quite a lot of people lined up to get up close to the displays to take photos of the displays or with small children.
